Video / Camcorder Tapes

VHS
Same size and shape as the traditional domestic videotape player / recorder. Cameras were big, bulky, heavy and normally held on the shoulder.
Resolution = 250 lines

S-VHS
S stands for ‘super’, and uprated version of VHS.

VHS-C
‘C’ means compact. The tapes is the same size as VHS but the cassette is much smaller, and so the camcorder could be made smaller too.
Resolution = 250 lines

S-VHS-C
Higher image quality on the smaller cassette.
Resolution = 400 lines

Video 8
8mm tape, very much smaller than VHS, but same resolution. Camcorders became even smaller, cheaper and more popular.
Resolution = 250 lines

Hi-8
A higher quality version of Video 8. Like Video 8 this is an analogue recording format.
Resolution = 400 lines

Digital 8
First of the digital formats, uses standard Hi-8 tapes but sound and vision is recorded digitally.
Resolution = 500 lines

MiniDV
Even smaller tapes. Extremely high quality compared with earlier formats. Also digital recording.
Resolution = 500+ lines
